Three teens injured in car crash on Hwy 80
Note: This story as originally published contained several reporting errors. The following is the corrected version of the story. The Countywide regrets the errors.
Three Karnes City teenagers were injured in a one-vehicle rollover accident near the intersection of State Highway 80 and FM 1354 in the early morning of February 3.
The driver, 17-year-old Karnes City resident Jamie Lea Rosales, was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio via AirLife helicopter along with 18-year-old passenger Ashley Michelle Lerma, also of Karnes City. Seventeen-year-old passenger Sabrina M. Mendoza was transported to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital via ambulance.
The accident happened after Rosales said she fell asleep at the wheel, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety report. Her purple 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier two-door was traveling in the southbound lane when it veered off into the improved shoulder.
Rosales woke up at that point, according to the report, and overcorrected, sending the vehicle into the northbound bar ditch where it struck a fence and rolled over twice. The report indicated she was wearing her seatbelt.
All three passengers were conscious and able to give statements some time after the accident took place. The extent of their injuries was not known as of press time Tuesday.
