Barrientez arraignment postponed

By Jason Clay Jansky

Jacob Barrientez was set to appear before district court May 10 regarding his felony manslaughter indictment, but his arraignment hearing was postponed.

Suspected of causing the January 18 shooting death of Roland Carrasco, Barrientez was indicted April 2 and scheduled to enter his plea May 10. His attorney was not able to make the hearing and it was postponed until May 29, according to District Clerk Robbie Shortner.

At the hearing, Barrientez will hear the charges against him and enter a plea.

His options include pleading guilty to the charges and facing sentencing or pleading not guilty and facing a district court jury trial. If the district attorney’s office offers a deal, he could agree to a sentence beforehand and plead guilty to the charges or plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Barrientez’s attorney was excused from attending the hearing due to a scheduling conflict with another trial he was working at the time.

Carrasco was fatally shot at 511 Victoria Street January 18. Kenedy police investigating the case obtained forensic evidence that was examined by a Bexar County crime lab before Barrientez’s indictment was handed down April 2.

Police have not been able to release specific details on the case pending the upcoming arraignment and possible trial.
