Opening of new Wal-Mart store less than a month away

By Jason Clay Jansky

The new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Kenedy is nearly ready for customers to begin shopping as workers are putting the final touches on the building leading up to their opening day.

Wal-Mart will officially swing open the front doors of their 100,000 square foot development at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8.

The facility will sport a pharmacy, garden center, and food center in addition to offering electronics, books, games, toys, and everything else the current facility sells.

Currently, the store’s entire infrastructure is in place outdoors. Inside, the store’s shelving and displays have been installed and are ready to be stocked with product.

"They are strictly moving in stuff now," Karnes City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Maggie Hunt said. "There’s a skeleton crew still left that’s taking care of all of the odds and ends, making sure the landscaping is all squared away and the lettering is perfect."

The new Wal-Mart will be getting a new inventory, as well.

"Everything from this old Wal-Mart, it is either going to be sold or sent back to their distributing center. It won’t cross the highway to go to this store," Hunt said.

Karnes County will be losing a McDonald’s, though. The fast food restaurant won’t be moving to the new facility and the franchise owner has not decided to move into or construct a free-standing McDonald’s.
