Kenedy company spills 8,000 gallons of diesel

By Jason Clay Jansky

Movac Service Co. is under government order to clean up a spill for the second time in two years.

The company, which is located on US Highway 181 in Kenedy, recently spilled an estimated 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel on its own office property and officials with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality say the company is in the process of getting the spill taken care of.

"The company is in the process of cleaning up," TCEQ representative Andrea Morrow said. "There will likely be fines, but that portion of the investigation is not completed."

The environmental impact of the spill has not yet been determined, but it comes just a little more than two years after the company spilled several thousand gallons of brine water March 2005, damaging the ground in two nearby properties.

The salty water seeped into the ground and killed all the vegetation in a 250-foot-by-150-foot swath, according to one property owner. The swath still is visible from U.S. Highway 181 today.

The brine water spill was handled under the jurisdiction of the Texas Railroad Commission, but seeing as this new spill contains a refined petroleum product, the TCEQ will be overseeing the cleanup and any possible fines.

Movac Area Manager Brent Owen declined to comment on the spill during an interview Tuesday.
