Suspects indicted in assault cases
By Jason Clay Jansky
A grand jury indicted 26 individuals in Karnes County October 2, including six men suspected of being involved in a stabbing assault and one former Karnes County sheriffs deputy suspected of having assaulted a man in his custody.
Pedro Adame, Edwardo Cervantes, Edward Gallegos, Ramiro Jaso, Jr., Hernando Carlos, and Alfredo Romero all were indicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police are alleging all six individuals attacked a man outside Outlaws Saloon in Kenedy around midnight July 19. Two of the individuals were reported to have stabbed 29-year-old Kenedy Raul Garcia twice in the back.
"Apparently a couple of the guys were fighting with some friends that the victim knew," Kenedy Police Sergeant Jeremy Stevens said shortly after the incident took place. "Those friends of his had already left. When he was walking to his truck, all six of these guys went to jump on him. He saw that two of them had knives in their hands."
Garcia was treated and released from Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital for the injuries he sustained.
Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a class A felony in the state of Texas. The individuals, if found guilty, could receive as little as five years in prison or as much as a life sentence.
Romero also was indicted on charges of burglary of a building, a state jail felony that carries a penalty of imprisonment up to two years and no less than 180 days in state jail.
Former Karnes County sheriff deputy David Kunschik was charged with official oppression by the same grand jury.
An investigation performed by the Texas Rangers is alleging Kunschik head butted 18-year-old Farin Martinez during a traffic stop in Runge September 1.
Kunschik has given a statement, but the Texas Rangers have refused to release its contents to The Countywide. The Countywide tried to reach District Attorney Rene Pena for comment, but a phone message left was not immediately returned.
The Texas Penal Code states a public servant acting under color of his office or employment commits official oppression if he intentionally subjects another to mistreatment, arrest, detention, search, seizure, dispossession, assessment, or lien that he knows is unlawful.
Kunschik could receive up to one year in jail or a fine as much as $4,000 if found guilty.
Kunschik was on paid administrative leave after the alleged incident September 1. His employment was terminated October 2 after the indictment was issued.
Karnes County Sheriff David Jalufka said Kunschik is not necessarily entitled to reinstatement if hes found not guilty of the charges.
