Hospital, extension office team up to offer wellness
On November 12, 2006, Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital employees successfully completed the 63-Day LoneStart Wellness Challenge. Nancy Kinkler, hospital Administrator, says the program was effective because "it was doable, realistic, promoted teamwork and offered positive reinforcement. Rather than focusing on diet and exercise, the LoneStart program focuses on achieving the modest but meaningful behavior changes that lead to long-term wellness."
The 49 OKMH employees who participated in the LoneStart Wellness Challenge experienced a total loss of 453.25 pounds, 895.75 inches and a total BMI reduction of 75.5 points. "It amazes our employees how they essentially doubled the loss of inches compared to total weight loss. Now the majority of employees are talking about making this their lifestyle. I think this is remarkable," says Kinkler.
Now, Otto Kaiser and the Karnes County Extension Office are presenting the LoneStart Challenge to the community. On January 11 and 12, community residents, businesses and organizations are invited to attend "kick-off" meetings at: 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on January 11, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on January 12. Interested residents can call 830-583-3401, ext. 154, to reserve a place.
"This is an especially good opportunity for area businesses that are considering a wellness program because their cost per participant will be significantly less than if they contracted directly with LoneStart," Kinkler said.
As part of the hospital’s program, County Extension Agent, Jenny Russell recorded and monitored the participants’ measurements. In addition to measuring BMI, which includes a weight measurement, Russell also measured inches and took before and after photos. She will also be involved in the same capacity for the "Kaiser Wellness Challenge."
The challenge is designed for teams of 3 people each, at a cost of $125 per team. Each team receives the: LoneStart Program Kit, Nutritional Information, Weight / Body Mass Index Calculations, Body Measurements, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Heart Rate, Oxygen Levels and a free exercise class for the 9-week program. The challenge will conclude on March 19th with cash prizes awarded to the winning teams.
