New trash pickup date set for KC residents

By Jason Clay Jansky

Karnes City front lawns have become a junk yard over the past two months due to delayed trash pickup dates, but city officials insist everything will be made right June 4.

City Administrator Larry Pippen said he had a private sit-down with two men from Waste Management in order to get the problem solved.

"I met with them May 10 and I have been assured and guaranteed that the trash pickup will commence June 4," Pippen said. "They have apologized to the city and the citizens. They were so far behind based on weather the past months that they’ve never caught up."

Piles and piles of junk have lined the curbs of Karnes City homes since the original trash pickup dates of March 5 through March 9. That date was delayed, another was set for April 16, and then that one came and went, too.

"We’ve done everything we possibly could and I will contact him this week to make sure we’re still on the calendar," Pippen said.

Karnes City Garden Club President Julie Weiss has been working for years to beautify Karnes City and she expressed gladness at Waste Management’s promise to be here June 4.

"We’re hoping," she said. "It looked horrible, but it will be better."

The garbage trucks will be able to pick up brush and other large items Waste Management’s typical refuse service is unable to remove.
