Kenedy City Council discusses arsenic levels in water supply
By Elise Tennant
The Kenedy City Council discussed arsenic levels in the town’s water supply during their June 12 meeting.
The maximum arsenic level allowed is 10 micrograms per liter. Kenedy did not meet this requirement in the first quarter of 2007 with an arsenic level of 18 micrograms per liter.
Presently, Kenedy’s arsenic levels are within the requirements, but the city will have to send a notice out to all citizens alerting them that there was a problem.
A project to eliminate arsenic from the water has cost the city $1.4 million and even though the water did not meet requirements in the first quarter, city officials remain optimistic, and said that the water is better now than it has ever been.
Also on the agenda was the city’s junked/abandoned vehicle policy.
Kenedy has identified 513 vehicles that fall into this category, and of those, 157 have been removed or disposed of.
Anyone in possession of one of the remaining 356 vehicles will be required to remove or dispose of them in an appropriate location immediately.
Starting July 2, public hearings will commence for anyone who has failed to deal with their own junked/abandoned vehicles.
Landlords are reminded that they are responsible for junked/abandoned vehicles on their property, even if the vehicles belong to tenants renting the property. City officials said that landlords have the power to tell their tenant to remove the vehicle immediately.
The council also worked to amend the noise abatement policy.
Although city officials did not come to a decision, they discussed what the policy would contain.
It is likely that a clause of the policy will say that any unreasonably or unnecessarily loud noise (public or private) will be punishable.
At the meeting it was also decided that the street adjacent to the Wal-Mart Supercenter would be named Business Park Boulevard.
