Kenedy City Council amends noise abatement ordinance

By Elise Tennant

Kenedy took another step toward having more peaceful evenings when the city council amended the noise abatement ordinance at their meeting on July 10.

"We intend to make the (ordinance) as broad as possible," said City Administrator Reggie Winters.

The ordinance prohibits any loud, unnecessary, or disturbing noise.

The councilmen approved the amended ordinance, and it become effective today, July 18.

The fine assessed for violation of the ordinance is anywhere from $50 to $300.

An update on the junked/abandoned vehicle situation was also presented. Of 161 residences containing 296 vehicles (in violation) there are 120 residences still in violation with a total of 233 vehicles left. City officials ran their inspection July 9. In order to give people enough time to get rid of the vehicles, they are extending the deadline one more week. The next step is public hearings for anyone still in violation.

City officials are also looking into creating an ordinance that mandates that salvage yards have to build high fences and roofs so that the cars inside are not visible to passers by.
