Falls City council members approve contribution to FELPS Youth Program

By Cathy Passmore

The Falls City Council members began their April 9 meeting with a discussion on the FELPS sponsored Youth Program for this summer of 2008. They voted to continue the program. They will contribute matching funds to the program and it is to be given through the Falls City Youth League and the Falls City Library.

In addition, two students will be hired for summer help. This has been done in the past and also will continue this year.

The council did not agree to a loan payment for street repairs. But it did vote to amend water and sewer rates at this time, raising the rates slightly. The refuse rates were not changed. The council also took no action on moving the community hall dumpster to a different location.

A representative for the Karnes County Economic Development Corporation board to replace Brent Houdmann was not selected at this meeting. It was tabled at this time and will be on the May council meeting agenda.

The council did act to come into compliance with the 218 agreement to change the coverage on the city’s part-time employee. This will ensure the employee will have social security and Medicare contributions and retirement benefits.

After an executive session meeting, the council members accepted the 90 day evaluation and pay raise for Scott Barrientez. Following discussion of old business and the city secretary’s report, the meeting adjourned.
