Runge mayor says utilities in decent shape

By Jason Clay Jansky

Runge council members took action on a few miscellaneous items, including the purchase of a new city lawnmower, during their regular meeting March 13.

Mayor Homer Lott described the previous month as slow and uneventful and said things in the utility departments were running smoothly aside from a few water leaks.

The lawnmower was purchased for $5,200 from Ewald Tractor in Floresville and will be used to maintain several of the recreational and park areas the city is developing around town, including the spring-fed fishing area and ball parks near the VFW hall.

Lott also advised council members not to sign off on a sale of property to the school, saying the city attorney needed to have a look at some wording.

"The lawyers have that and they’ve worked that out," Lott said.

The school wants to buy the property — which belongs jointly to the city, school, and hospital district — to develop for recreational purposes.

The city will be keeping their mineral interest in the property, though, Lott said.

Council members also took a look at a sewer problem on Cleveland and Mugge streets. A previous contractor, ASC Paving from San Antonio, didn’t finish the job, according to Lott.

The 10-inch sewer line in the area needs a manhole because sand has been getting into the sewage system. Council members voted to hire Mercer Construction, a contractor from Edna, to do the job.

They also agreed to advertise an employment opportunity in The Countywide, Victoria Advocate, and San Antonio Express-News. The city is in need of a wastewater license superintendent to help run the sewer plant.
