Karnes City Little League in jeopardy

By Jason Clay Jansky

The Karnes City Little League is in danger of shutting down after volunteer support has dwindled in recent months.

The league has until January to fill a board with members and a president, but at their October meeting, only one person that wasn’t a board member attended.

"We’re facing a dilemma. The Karnes City Little League is in desperate need of some help," league volunteer Phyllis Krause said. "We’ve had wonderful financial support from all of our businesses and individuals, but we need volunteers."

The current board members do not number enough to keep the league going by official Little League standards. Karnes City needs a full board and a president in place by January 1 or the national Little League in Williamsport, Pa. will not recognize the local chapter.

That will mean trouble for any parents and their children that want to play baseball in Karnes County in the coming years.

"This is really, really important, here. If we do fold, all of our equipment and everything that we’ve worked for all these years becomes property of the (national) Little League. It’ll be gone, and for us to ever establish a Karnes City Little League here again will be very hard," Krause said.

Several other volunteers also are needed to keep day-to-day Little League operations going. The league needs people to help with registrations, a player agent to set up scheduling of games, workers to perform field maintenance, and people to man the league’s concession stand.

The next meeting for the Karnes City Little League will be 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Karnes City fire station.
