Schools locked down after Yorktown bank robbery

By Jason Clay Jansky

Schools in Runge and Kenedy were under lockdown status on January 23 after a masked man cleaned out two cash drawers at Prosperity Bank in Yorktown.

The bank was hit by a lone masked gunman around 11 a.m. that day and after he made his getaway, word got out to Runge and Kenedy schools. The entire Runge school district was on full lockdown and the Kenedy high school and middle school both were on a "silent lockdown" as a safety precaution.

Yorktown schools were also on lockdown.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials have asked police not to release the dollar amount of the stolen money, but Yorktown Chief of Police Paul Campos said the robber use a semi-automatic pistol to force bank tellers to empty two cash drawers into an off-white canvas sack.

"He came in the front door (wearing) a ski mask (and) a baseball cap," Campos said. "He was very quick and precise. We gather he was in there for about a minute and a half."

The masked man ordered bank employees to lie on the floor as he exited through the bank’s rear door. So far police have been unable to trace his whereabouts or obtain information as to his identity.

Runge and Kenedy schools both resumed normal operations on Thursday.
