Wilson launches 2008 VOTEXAS Program

Recently Texas Secretary of State Phil Wilson launched a statewide voter education program called VOTEXAS - You Count. Texas makes sure.

Secretary Wilson will lead the year-long, public education initiative that will focus on educating Texans about their rights as a voter and "Pretty much everything you could ever want to know about voting in Texas."

"It’s time to get back to the basics of voting," stated Wilson. "My goal this year is to make sure that Texans not only know when, where and how to vote, but that they also understand their rights as a voter. My office is dedicated to protecting voters’ privacy and ensuring that every Texan can cast a secure, private ballot no mater their language, education or physical capacity. I am excited to spread that message across the Lone Star State."

VOTEXAS is a federally-funded voter education program developed in response to the significant sweeping reform to the elections processes throughout the state and nation as a result of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. Through the improved VOTEXAS.org website, and revised, comprehensive brochures, Wilson is confident that Texans will be better prepared than ever before to cast their ballots. Wilson and his office are working with Texas’ 254 counties as well as various civic organizations across the state to ensure that the VOTEXAS message is heard in every region of Texas.

"We have a busy election season ahead of us," Wilson continued. "The primaries are just around the corner, we have an election in May, and of course we can’t forget the presidential election coming up in November. I would call on all Texans to take a moment to visit our website or call our toll-free number to have their questions answered now so they are fully prepared and confident to exercise their right to vote on Election Day."

As Chief Elections Officer for the state of Texas, Wilson and his office provide assistance and advice to county election officials on the proper conduct of elections. Wilson and his office are working with Texas’ 254 counties as well as various civic organizations across the state to ensure that the VOTEXAS message is heard in every region of Texas.
