Falls City school board discusses facility improvements
By Kevin Matula
The Falls City ISD board of trustees met at a special meeting, Wednesday, March 5 to prioritize district needs/goals and determine funds to be used.
"I preface all these (proposals) by saying that one of the duties of this board, is to make decisions to where to allocate funds and prioritize the needs of the district," said Superintendent Linda Bettin.
According to Bettin the district site-based committee proposed improvements at their own meeting that were priorities such as additional restrooms at the high school, concession stand/restroom, a vehicle, varsity locker room upgrade, and a new bus.
"Any time we as a community and taxpayers see money spent in one way or another it is important to me to basically see that that money is spent first of all in the most needed areas," community member Jeffery Dziuk said in public comment. "I know this school’s roof is in terrible shape, there are other things that I think could use some improving on the grounds themselves, if that means that we take care of that first, that should be our priority."
Dziuk notes that the restrooms (football field) are in bad shape, but the community could fix them up to standards, without contract labor right now. Dziuk said that water has leaked on the gym floor.
"I remember back in 2001 when we started these projects with the bond, one of the bond improvement plans was to re-roof the facilities," said Board of Trustees Vice-President Michael Pruski. …and at that point Raymond (board president, Dziuk) you may remember we didn’t do it because we ran out of money."
If the school was to build new restrooms, some feel that the restrooms should be added on before the roof.
"One thing we need to do if we are considering additional restrooms at the high school… if we are going to expand somewhere out with restrooms, I would want to look at the restroom extension first because then you don’t want to have to tie in a roof, then try to tie in another roof," Board of Trustees Secretary Mindy Jendrusch said.
The board referred back to the last meeting where board member Stephen Dziuk brought some plans for a new concession stand. The plan is a basic building with concession area, and two restrooms.
"We can do things economically, and I guess that’s what Falls City’s famous for…the community involvement and how everyone works together," President Raymond Dziuk said. He and other board members noted that the community has put up lights at the football field, baseball field and installed the air-conditioning in the gymnasium.
Ag teacher Brett Wright said in public comment that the school should consider buying a new school vehicle, which estimated by Bettin would cost $35,000-$45,000.
The board also discussed locker room improvements, such as new lockers and replumbing the locker room facilities.
No decision was made on which goals/needs will be brought up first until the board has more dollar-amount figures from Bettin and committees that board members established.
