Mother’s Day

I was fortunate to have had a great mother! She taught me many things. She loved me, encouraged me and taught me many things.

Encouraged me by patting me on the back and on occasions just a bit lower than that!

I can almost hear many of you saying, you think you had a great mother; let me tell you about my mother. If you are one of these let me congratulate you as some have not been so fortunate.

Be that as it may the mother I want to tell you about today is the mother of my children! She was and is a great mother! She also patted Craig and Connie on the back and a bit lower at times.

A learning moment

Today, I heard an advertisement on the radio that talked about how important it is for parents to take advantage of "learning moments" with their children.

I’ve also heard these called "teachable moments," but it doesn’t matter what you call them, the key is to recognize them when they happen, and take advantage of a child’s natural curiosity in a way that will not only teach the child something, but the parent, as well.

Being the father of three, I know that these moments happen very frequently, but I am not always able to take the time to follow through with the learning process when these moments happen.

Fortunately, my daughter is now reaching the age where she can actually help me follow through on these opportunities for learning.

My daughter and I were at Bluebonnet Days Saturday, and she was so well-behaved that I thought a special reward was in order.

Molly picked out a small toy puppy dog – a Dalmatian.

It was love at first sight.

For the birds

Helena Handbasket

By Cletus Bianchi

This weekend hundreds of hunters will descend on Karnes County in pursuit of a daily bag limit of twelve mourning and white-wing doves. They’ll drive for hours, stay in hotel rooms, eat at restaurants, and buy lots of shotgun shells and assorted beverages. For many, this will be the only weekend they hunt dove.

Seem excessive? Shoot, I know a guy that loads up a bird dog and a buddy or two and drives for two days to states in the northern and Midwestern sections of the U.S. in pursuit of upland birds and has yet to fill a daily bag. And that’s after months of reading and research on when and where to go.

Seem crazy? I also know a guy that spent several months on a tractor last spring clearing brush so that the few quail that might survive the drought of last summer (remember that?) had adequate edge cover and weeds to rear multiple broods for the following season. And if he’s not crazy, then his buddies that visit from across the state during the spring and summer to shred and plow in preparation for opening day surely are.

Bad word

I suppose I won’t be nominated for mother of the year after this weekend, but I try.

Sunday was a tough day. I was sick. The kids were still a little sick. I had mountains of laundry and other household tasks to complete.

I was tired in the evening. After preparing something for everyone to eat, bathing and dressing the kids, I was putting the last load of laundry in the dryer. It was after nine p.m., and I had instructed my daughter to go to the bathroom to brush her teeth as it was past her bedtime.

My husband was watching the children.

When I got back from the laundry room I saw our 19-month-old son looking very pleased with himself, standing in the doorway of the bathroom.
