Odds and ends

By: W.C. Reader

Always easy to remember the birthday of our “Little Sister”, Ora Wiedemar, of San Antonio, which comes to the same date as Independence Day, July 4th. We join Mama Doris in wishing you a happy birthday this year and those that follow. And pet puppies Sam Beaux and Samantha also said to tell you “Woof, Woof!” By the way, her age is censored material. ------- Gloria Zapata and Felipe Zapata are happy to have recently been informed that son, Patrick Zapata has been returned to the United States after serving in the Iraqi war zone. Understand he now is in North Carolina, awaiting his new assignment. ------- There was a little delay, but we finally got around to thanking David Franke for seeing that we received a Cardui calendar. We use that to tell the time of day. By the way, David, is Dr. C.C. Quillian still using that space you reserved for him at the guest table in the Frontier Pharmacy? -------- And while Dr. Quillian is on our mind, anybody know if he and neighbor Jennifer McAda have settled – and amicably – that little matter of a lake flowing into each other’s backyard? -------- It’s like reading a history book when you sit down with Emerick Opiela and get him to talk about the old timers who lived in Karnes County during its formative years. ------- Hilda Castro took a moment to tap us on the shoulder and awaken us the other day while we were dozing on that bench inside the doors at Wal-Mart. Hilda is an ex-student of ours, and always seems to have a pleasant smile on her face. ------- More on former students: Linda Yanta, husband Zachary Yanta stopped by for a little chatter the other night after telling us they had just come in from a day’s work down on the farm in McMullen County. We take it for granted you weren’t including Linda in that farm work, were you Zachary? -------- Kenneth Foster and Myona Foster have their bags all packed and ready to take off for Dallas on notification of their first grandchild. They say it’s going to be a little girl, and they want to be there to start spoiling her right away. Congratulations in advance. -------- Run across three of our old friends, Charles Ruckman, Gus Tips, and Milton Alexander, sitting together at a recent school reunion; and while we probably are wrong, it still seemed to us that they are beginning to look alike. Just a thought.  ------- Gaylon Oehlke and pretty wife, Kathy Oehlke making the world a little more cheerful when we paused to chat with them recently. -------- Walked outside the other night to have a look at the moon, and when we discovered moisture forming on the top of our car, we started to give Leonard Ables a call, and see if he wanted to take us hunting. But after thinking it over, we backed out, deciding Leonard is getting too old for that. Maybe brother-in-law, Earl Brown ought to start teaching him to point pictures.
