Odds and Ends

By: W.C. Reader
Roger Overby complaining that the recent picture of him and Paul May out on the golf course didn’t say which one of them was the best golfer. No Roger, and we noted it didn’t attempt to say which one of you was the best looking either. ----- Cotton Beam, a very attentive husband. Caught him at Wal-Mart recently and he told me he was getting a new blade so his wife could finish mowing the lawn. ----- Not to Gaylon Oehlke: Shirley Pahlitza replaced our broken rain gauge the other day, but we still may drop by and pick up a spare from you soon. Those things wear out pretty quickly. ------ Carter Snooks called the other night to ask us whether we remembered that August 5 was our birthday. We remember, Carter, but when a fellow is approaching 84 years, he tends to overlook things like that. ----- Former student Yvonne Medrano took time to say “Howdy” to us recently while she was in town. Still a mighty pretty girl. ----- Glad to see that Becky Sansom, Ruth Hollman, Frances Chesser, and Lillian Williams continue their admirable practice each year of turning up at the fireworks display during the Runge Independence Day Celebration. ----- Congratulations to Dawn Schendel Butler of the Goliad School District for having received the Excellence in Teaching Rising Star Award, a statewide honor given by HEB. Dawn will receive $5,000 and her school also will receive a $5,000 grant. She is the daughter of Lyle Schendel and Wanda Schendel and the granddaughter of Bernice Schendel. ----- Saw Becky Phelps trailing along after daddy, Dr. Wade Phelps, the other day, and she must have wanted to go incognito because she was dressed in a uniform of a horned toad. By the way, Becky, aren’t you the mascot of that organization? ----- Jr. Moczygemba confiding to us that he is kin to Vincent Brysch and we’re just wondering if that will buy you anything Jr.? ----- Lamar Hunt must be what you call a loyalist in the fashion trade. He and this old Country Boy used to wear khaki trousers when we attended high school in Kenedy during the 1930’s and he still seems to prefer them now when we see him around town. ----- Cathy Moy of San Antonio still used the Runge 4th of July Celebration to come back and have a look-see at her old hometown, and to find out what Mama Mary Moy and Papa Jerry Moy have been up to. ----- We started with golf and we are going to end with golf. Banker David Styra was featured as a golfer in the Victoria paper recently, and we asked him how he arranged that. His answer was, “a $100 bill will get you anything.” Think he was “pulling our leg”; because his friends say he doesn’t part with $100 that easily.
