Odds and Ends

By: W.C. Reader

Note to Janice Porter: We read this newspaper, as well as write for it. Now we have known you for most of our life, and were neighbors at one time. So we are wondering why we had to wait so many years before learning a couple of weeks ago that you have such great talent for baking jalapeno cornbread? Bravo! ----- Grandpa Callan Jonas and Grandma Cathy Jonas mighty proud of grandson Dusty Jonas of La Vernia, who recently set a national record in high jump by clearing the bar at 7 feet, 3 inches in the 2003 AAU Junior Olympic Games. He is the son of Mike Jonas and Donna Jonas, who live in La Vernia. Congratulations to all of you. By the way, just as an after thought; wonder how high old Callan can jump these days? ----- And also a question for Hill Medrano of Runge. What in the world have you done with Gus Tips’ wolfhounds? We haven’t heard them barking in several months. Are they saving up for winter? ------ Surely have been missing the camaraderie of those “Men’s Study Clubs” which used to be presided over by the likes of Ferd Sellers at the Ken Kream in Kenedy, and Paul Bordovsky at the City Pharmacy in Karnes City. Are they still holding regular meetings and are they still spreading it as thick as ever? ------ Ro-Ro Du Bois still regular in attendance at Ed and Gladys’ Restaurant in Nordheim, and the last time we saw her there, she was entertaining her grandson. Don’t know which of them was going to pick up the check. ----- Ran into Bob Jinette and Charlotte Jinette recently, and asked Charlotte if she still was blowing on the that trumpet she used to toot in the Kenedy High School Band. Bob started to say something but she quieted him immediately. Charlotte gained notoriety as a member of the Kenedy band when it was organized in the mid 1930’s, and she was the only girl member. ------ Been admiring that cotton crop which Sam Hemby has been growing in a field along side the highway between Kenedy and Karnes City. Have you been having any trouble lining up cotton-pickers; Sam, or is that a task you are turning over to wife Pat Hemby and daughter Julie Nichols?

Also, what is the going price for picking cotton, still 50¢ a hundred? ------ Hope you saw the pictures and read the accompanying stories concerning Aaron Garcia, talented organist and pianist from Nordheim, which appeared recently in the Victoria Advocate and the Yorktown News-View. He is the son of Anna Marie Garcia and Rene Garcia. He departed a few days ago for Waco, Texas, where he enrolled in Baylor University (but not to play basketball!). He will be continuing his study of the pipe organ. ------ Exchanged pleasantries with Mary Ann Dragon at Wal-Mart, and she brought us up-to-date about how things are progressing in the Harmony Community. Mary Ann is the lady who used to serve us those delicious tidbits at HEB in months past. ------- Where can you find a more pleasant couple than Ruben Oehlke and Vernell Oehlke? After a person has paused to visit with them, you probably will depart whistling a merry tune, and decide that all is well with the world. ----- Mrs. Nash Garcia, librarian at the Runge Public Schools, called to tell us that her son, Sgt. Thomas Garcia, is back in the United States at Camp Pendleton, California, after having spent the past several months in Kuwait. Welcome home, Thomas, and hurry back to Texas to find out if Mama’s home cooking tastes as good as ever! Thomas serves in the U.S. Marines.
