Odds and Ends

By: W.C. Reader
James Johnson seemed a little disappointed the other day when he accosted us and asked what was going on in Runge, only to have us tell him “nothing”. He acted like he wanted us to go back home and start something. ----- Certainly did enjoy our recent conversation with Adela Moreno Davila who handles inventory control at Stimson’s. She is a member of Runge’s Moreno family, and we still remember her and her brothers and sisters as being hard-working, well-educated students who went out in life and became very successful citizens. And to reach these goals, they were encouraged all along the way by their parents, Pedro and Idalia Moreno. ----- Saw Ginger Johnson come barreling into HEB’s the other evening, make a purchase, and then dash out in what we calculate was record time for a woman shopper. Made us wonder if she had left something cooking on the stove. ----- One of the cherished hobbies of Runge’s Mayor Jack Roberson is baseball, and he has been a dyed-in-the-wool St. Louis Cardinal fan since 1942. Furthermore, he owns an official Cardinal baseball cap, which frequently adorns his head. ----- Took Mama Doris out the other night to test the cuisine of Kenedy’s newest restaurant, The Cazadores, and immediately bumped into two good friends, Brenda Janysek and Leo Janysek who we hadn’t seen in many a moon. Both still have the hearty laugh, pleasant personality and the ability to pick a restaurant that serves delicious food. ----- Saw Morris Foley and Carla Foley entering HEB’s recently, and judging from the hungry look on the face of Morris, they were going to run up a pretty hefty grocery bill before they left the place. ----- Mighty fine music! That’s the verdict of Helena’s Cletus Bianchi on the monthly opry program, which is presented by the good folks over in Nordheim. But better still, he says you ought to go over there and see – and hear - for yourselves. ----- Bill Jauer thinks he has a cure for the loneliness we have developed since G.J. Tips got rid of his wolfhounds. Bill says all we have to do is open the back door at night and listen to his three Beagles chasing rabbits. ----- Want to thank Bill Chapman for helping our dear wife Doris avoid a problem in which she was about to become involved recently. She had finished her shopping in Kenedy and was in the process of getting in a car to return home to Runge. But Bill, whose school career taught him to be ever vigilant, walked over and suggested the owner of the care she was trying to enter would probably be happier of she would drive her own motor vehicle home, it being parked four cars further down. ----- Kevin McCarley tooling happily along the sidewalk in front of HEB’s recently, leaving you with the thought that grocery shopping is something he would enjoy doing every day. ----- Just before the recent Runge – Yorktown football game, old friend, Dalton Metting gave us a call, wanting to arrange a little wager on the outcome with us. We thanked him for considering us, but we told him we were Lutherans and didn’t do such things. Besides, the odds were not too good. ----- Leticia Gustafson, formerly of Kenedy and now of Corpus Christi, flagging us down to tell us she is a grandma now. Isn’t that also a sign of growing old, Leticia? ----- Winnie Robinson telling us that she and husband Richard Robinson are planning a vacation to Colorado real soon. Hope they noticed that it is already snowing up there. ----- Joe Ed Panish telling us that he finally is getting used to retirement. That’s a revelation to us; Joe Ed. Retirement is something we never knew you had to get used to.
