Odds and Ends

By: W.C. Reader
Amos Harden seated himself beside us on that comfortable bench at Wal-Mart’s recently, looked over both shoulders, and the proceeded to unburden himself about the length of time it takes his wife to do a little shopping. Be a little cautious on matters like that, Amos. We know from experience that women can get a little touchy on things like that. ----- While comparing notes with Donald Lee Menn on rainfall totals the other day, we asked him if he was going to get back in politics and raising cotton again. After that, we didn’t get to say a word for the next five minutes. ----- And while we are on the subject of cotton, Julie Nichols straightened us out on the status of that cotton patch which we have been admiring during the summer months while it was maturing on the left side of Hwy 181, between Kenedy and Karnes City. Papa Sam Hemby stills owns the land, but Patrick Tam rents it and grows the cotton. ----- Couldn’t help noticing Ferd Sellers’ muddy boots as he passed us by the other day, and it left us wondering whether he had been working in a flower bed or whether he had gotten stuck in a bar ditch. ----- Pat Hyde, whom we lured into the teaching profession a couple of decades ago, tells us she is a homebody now. Also reports those two pretty daughters now are getting their mail at San Antonio and San Marcos. ----- When we journeyed over to the Eye Center in Victoria the other day to get a report on our cataract surgery, the first person we saw was Lucille Koenig, accompanied by her chauffeur and husband, Calvin Koenig. And when we returned home to Runge later in the day, Lucille was the first person to greet us, down at the Post Office. But she had dropped her chauffeur somewhere along the way. ----- Shirley Janecek and Kay Osburn back from a fall vacation in upper New York and Canada, where they, among other things, viewed the Niagara Falls from both the United States side and the Canada side, and admired the autumn foliage. Was there any suggestion of snow along the way at this early date? ----- After being restricted for several months, we were able to hobble over to Gladys and Ed’s (or vice versa) Cafe in Nordheim on a recent Thursday night and observe the weekly get-together of the Linda Voelkel clan. Made us feel so good that we started to go over and sing “Hail, Hail the Gang’s All Here” to this jolly group. ----- And Mary Steves and Jerry Steves stopped by the table to greet us with a pleasant “Howdy” and tell us how their family was getting along. ----- Also, while we were leaving we ran into old friend Ray Marek, who always leaves you laughing by telling you two or three stories from his large repertoire. ----- If you ever happen to be looking for James Stewart, June Stewart, James Johnson, and Lucille Pace on Tuesday, a good place to start would be Pizza Hut in Kenedy. The time? Around noon! ----- Josie Garza, a former student of ours stopping Mama Doris and us to let us know she and husband now are grandparents. Congratulations! But we fell a little old now when our former students start telling us about their grandchildren.
