Odds and ends

By: W.C. Reader

Nancy Ella Avant always well groomed and wearing a pleasant smile when we meet her downtown. We first met Nancy in her girlhood days, when she and the late Shirley Eckols Ruckman were taking tap-dancing lessons. Can you still do that, Nancy? ----- While talking on the phone lately with Bob Thonhoff (Prof. Katzenjammer), he asked us if we could remember still some of the kindly characters who used to frequent the sidewalks and streets of Karnes County in years gone by. We told him that, off the top of our head, that list would have to include the likes of Tom Smiley (the Barefoot Judge), Uncle Johnny Rutledge, Baylor Young, Uncle Bob Morgan, Bob Jones, and Dick Reynolds, just to name a few! ----- Caught Dr. Causey Quillian exercising with some dumb-bells (the metal type; not the mental type) recently and asked him the meaning of that. With tongue in cheek, he told us he was getting ready to go skiing. Think we had better talk that over with his mentor, David Franke. ----- Sylvia Moreno, who works in the lab at the Kaiser Hospital, is such a pleasant, kind person, that we almost look forward to when the Doctor sends us out to have her draw a blood specimen. ----- Ran into Bud Huwe and Fran Huwe over in Kenedy during that recent cold spell and had a pleasant time talking with them about the weather, personal ailments, grandchildren and other weighty matters. ----- While dining with Mama Doris at Luby’s in Victoria a couple of weeks ago, we were delighted to have Dr. Mike Mendoza (a former student) stop by our table to bring us up to date on his career. Mike is the son of Rev. Inez Mendoza and Mrs. Lorenza Mendoza of Runge. ----- Just about every other day, Mama is telling us about a birthday party that friend Mary Huffstutler is having. How many birthdays do you have each year, Mary? ---- Met Rene Goforth recently, who is President of Hilb, Rogal and Hamilton Co. in Victoria; and when he found out we lived in Runge, he asked us to say howdy to his friends and our neighbors, Milton Alexander and Ruth Alexander and tell them to come by when they are in town and he would like to buy lunch for them. ---- You can meet some mighty interesting people while eating a hamburger at the Dairy Queen. One such person is Mrs. Dottie Hackler of Choate, who is a lovely lady and an interesting conversationalist. ----- While shopping for groceries at HEB on a recent day, we were soon joined at quick intervals by three former Kenedy School administrators, Bill Chapman, Larry Kiesling, and Sam Swierc. Now there are three fellows who appear to have been well trained by their wives.
